Responsibilities.

Hey everyone! How are you on this not so awesome because it's Monday glorious morning? :D I'm...pretty good. I've got alot done this morning in spite of suffering from a serious case of Sunday-lag. What's Sunday-lag, you're probably thinking. You know, what jet-lag is right? Well Sunday-lag is like that except it attacks you on Monday mornings. Yesterday was a more-than-usually tiring Sunday, so I'm still recovering... *stifles a yawn* Anyway... =)

When you saw the title of this post there's a very good possibility you groaned in dread. "Oh, great," you may've moaned. "The girl who is so irresponsible in her blogging, writing, and probably everything else is giving me a lecture on responsibility?!"

If that was you (or even if it wasn't), take a deep breath and relax. This isn't going to be a lecture. ;)

What comes to mind when you think of responsibilities? For me I think of several lines I've heard many times – growing up and still now. (You'd think I would have learned to listen by now.)

"Keep up with your stuff."

"A place for everything and everything in its place."

"Watch out for your brother."

"Make sure you finish your schoolwork."

We've all heard those once or twice or a couple hundred times, right? ;) But is that the only areas we should be responsible? Our stuff and our siblings? Both of those are very important – don't get me wrong! :) But what about other things? Like our speech? Our behavior? The way we present ourselves? Shouldn't we be responsible in those areas too?

So, suppose you've made the decision – you've committed yourself to living everyday as a responsible Christian lady (or gentlemen...if there're any out there. ;)). You think you're doing pretty good. It's been a week since you lost your glasses (this is a big one for me), your phone, or your notes for your research paper. You kept up with your little siblings at Bible study, you finished your assigned reading a day early, you even made dinner and cleaned up afterwards Friday to give mom the night off.

Are you being responsible? Are these things important and God-honoring? Absolutely!! But...what about other areas?

What about when you ignored your sister after she took your movie without asking?

What about when you refused to talk to your little brother after he squirted questionable substances in your toothbrush? (I've been there, friends.)

What about when you ignored the little kids at church and chose to talk to your friends instead?

Are these things Christ-like? God-honoring? The right way for Christians to show God's love to this world? I don't think so. My challenge to you is to truly strive each and everyday to be a responsible Christian, sister, daughter, and friend.

Instead of getting upset with your sister for taking your movie, suggest the two of you (or all your siblings) have a movie night for some sibling bonding time.

When your brother squirts stuff in your toothbrush, don't fly mad. Maybe he's just trying to get your attention. (Let's face it – he succeeded!) Try to spend some special time with him too.

Make an effort to talk to the younger kids at church. Be sure to include them in games and activities. When you we're their age, you looked up to the big kids too.

This post is ending up a lot longer than I intended for it to be, so here's my point. Be responsible in everything. Be an 'all or none person' (all, preferably!). Ask God to help you think and act responsibly in everything you do. In your relationships, in your schoolwork, in keeping up with your stuff and your siblings, in seeking God's will for your life... (That could be a complete other post.)

I'm taking the challenge. I'm going to really try to do this. Will you join me? Let's help each other, pray for each other, and hold each other accountable. :)

Your sister in Christ,
~Faith

  1. I'll join you. :) This was so good and I can relate to so many of the things you mentioned. Sometimes I get SO tired of being told that "now that you're older you need to take more responsibility." Or when you mess up you are told that you need to "become more responsible." But then again, we all want more responsibility, right? But we only want the responsibility that we want. We (I) need to realize that responsibility isn't bad. Thanks so much, Faith!

    1. Thanks, Bethany! PKs unite! :D
Oh, I know. I've heard that a lot. ;) You're absolutely right, too. Responsibility isn't a bad thing – but we have to take it all. In the areas we want responsibility and freedom to make decisions, and the areas we don't necessarily 'want' it as well. :)

      Thanks for commenting, Bethany! :-)

  2. I love your posts Faith. I'm going to focus on being more responsible to what God calls me to do. (My Mom has given up on bossing me) and I have one question I have to ask? What in the world did Tucker put in your toothbrush?!?

    1. I'm glad you enjoyed it! :D I've really given it alot of thought – before I wrote this and since – it's something I overlook soooo often. I really want to do better about that.
      Hehehe. ;)

Tucker put paint in my toothbrush. Like the kind guys smear on they're faces to go duck-hunting. ;) A couple months ago I'm reaching for the toothbrush and there's this black stuff in the bristles! The truth came out later and Dad, uh, wasn't all that pleased. ;)

      Thanks for commenting, Linda! :)

  3. First of all, can't help but laugh at what Tucker did to your toothbrush XD Brothers. My brother and sister once made me a chocolate chip cookie but filled it with toothpaste so when I ate it, all I could taste was crunchy cookie with gooey, minty, toothpaste :P

But, great post! It was a blessing to read and a good reminder that we all need to hear. I especially liked how you mentioned spending time with the little kids at church. I do remember being little and looking up to the teens and how special I felt when they included me. If I can be an example to them, that would be amazing.

    1. Oh, he's terrible sometimes. ;) Glad you all are getting a laugh over it! XD Oh my goodness!!! Lauren, that sounds horrible!!! Ugh, I can't imagine something so nasty. :P

I'm glad you enjoyed it! :D I've thought a lot about that too. I'm the only teen girl at church right now, and God has really been reminding me to include those sweet little kiddos. Just playing with them and making them feel special. :)

      Thanks for commenting, Lauren! <3
